Repair patch instructions

Hello and welcome to the world of mending! Whether this is your first repair job or your 1000th thank you for making the decision of mending and prolonging the life of your clothes. These are the instructions for my easy to use repair patches for sale at www.fixedbycedar.com. They are waterproof and are hand made from a mixture of spinnaker tape and tuff tape. They are suitable for waterproof rain coats and down jackets.

How to apply your patch:

1)      Check your patch size. You want at least a cm of patch covering the area around your rip/hole.

2)      Clean the area where you will be placing the patch and let it dry completely before you apply the patch.

·         If the damage goes all the way through the fabric then it’s worth patching the back of the fabric first with the tuff tape provided. (If it’s a multi layer fabric and the damage is only to the outer layer, this is not necessary.)

3)      Lay out the garment as flat as possible making sure there is no fabric bunched underneath. If you have a second person handy get them to hold the fabric flat while you apply the patch. This can be especially helpful on a down/synthetic jacket.

4)      Carefully peel off the back of the patch and place it over the damaged area. Try to avoid touching as much of the adhesive side as possible. Start applying from one end, smoothing down the patch in one direction as you go. Try to avoid wrinkles forming as you go.

·         If you are needing to patch over a seam then press the area of patch you want into the seam first and apply the rest of the patch. This means it will get right into the crease first and not form a gap over the seam.

5)      Once you are happy with your placement, press down firmly in order to help the patch stick. This generally sticks quite well. You can help the patch bond even better with heat. – Recommended.

6)      You can do this with a heat press or an iron. If you have a heat press then set it to 90c or it’s lowest setting. If using an iron use the nylon setting or the lowest setting. Use an cotton t shirt or cloth and cover the patch then press the heat on top for no more than 3 seconds. Check your item and press down over the patch again with your hands. Give it a rub, if it doesn’t feel hot you can go again for another 3 seconds.

Patches that have been bonded with heat should be fine to go through the wash but keep it on a cold , 20c, and gentle wash.  It is also important to check the washing instructions for your garment as outdoor gear often needs special treatment anyway and is generally not advised to wash unless necessary.

Happy Patching!!
